International ferries run to the French port of Dieppe, Seine-Maritime, a distance of 75.5 miles (122 km). Although there are some derelict signs of the one-time ferry operations, the harbour still sees a great deal of freight and passengers movement.

The port is also served by Newhaven Harbour railway station.^[2]

Asham Quarry is a 2.6-hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Newhaven in East Sussex. It is a Geological Conservation Review site and in the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This site provides important biostratigraphical and lithostratigraphical evidence about environmental conditions during the last 100,000 years, the Last Glacial Period and the Holocene. It is notable for its extensive early and mid Holocene deposits and for having yielded a series of radiocarbon dates.^[3]

Milton Gate Marsh is a 17.7-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Eastbourne in East Sussex.

This site consists of two areas of alluvial wetland in the valleys of the River Cuckmere and one of its tributaries. There is a rich variety of invertebrates, including seventeen nationally scarce species such as the sallow clearwing moth and the beetles Ochthebius exaratus and Stenolphus skrimshiranus.^[4]
