Museum in Novocherkassk, Russia. The Museum of history of Don Cossacks is a museum of art, culture and history of Don Cossacks in Novocherkassk, Rostov oblast, Russia. The oldest museum in Southern Russia, it was founded in 1886. Its collections, of which only 151,000 items is on permanent display, comprise over 200,000 items. The collections occupy a complex of four historic buildings in Novocherkassk: the main building on Atamanskaya street, Memorial House-Museum of painter Ivan Krylov, Memorial House-Museum of painter Mitrofan Grekov and the Ataman palace.[1]

Arches of Triumph

Arches of Triumph in Novocherkassk are monuments of Russian Classicist architecture. The monumental complex consists of two triumphal arches western and northern, situated respectively in the south-west and north of Novocherkassk. Built in 1817 to commemorate the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812, they symbolize the military contribution of the Don Cossacks in the struggle against Napoleon. The only triumphal gates in Southern Russia are officially declared objects of cultural heritage of federal significance.[2]

The Horse Monument to Platov - a monument in the city of Novocherkassk, Rostov Region. The bronze monument to Platov sitting on horseback is set on Platovsky Prospekt in front of the Ascension Cathedral. It was opened in 2003. The authors of the monument are sculptor Sknarin, the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and architect Zhukov.[3]

Russian orthodox church in Novocherkassk, Russia. The Ascension Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church in Novocherkassk, Rostov Oblast, Russia. It used to be one of the largest churches of the Russian Empire and the main church of the Don Host Province.

The five-domed building, which stands 75 meters tall, is a notable example of the Russian Neo-Byzantine architecture. It was erected between 1891 and 1904 on the site of an earlier church. The first church on the site was built to Luigi Rusca's designs. It collapsed in 1846. A replacement church collapsed 17 years later.

The existing church building was designed by a local architect, Alexander Yashchenko, and dedicated in 1905. The worshipers were expelled from the church by the Communists in 1934. The Orthodox congregation resumed services in the upper church in 1942, after the Communists had been ousted from the Don Region by the Wehrmacht.

The Starocherkassk and Novocherkassk cathedrals are considered the main spiritual centres of the Don Cossackdom. Matvey Platov, Vasily Orlov-Denisov, Yakov Baklanov and other atamans of the Don Cossack Host are buried in the church. A bronze statue of Yermak, the conqueror of Siberia, in front of the porch was designed by Mikhail Mikeshin.[4]

Monument to Yakov Baklanov

Sculpture. Monument to Yakov Baklanov is a bronze monument to participant in the Caucasian War, General Yakov Baklanov. It was originally located in Saint Petersburg at the cemetery in Smolny Convent above the grave of the commander. It was built from private donations. In 1909 during the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yakov Baklanov it was decided that transferral of the burial in Novocherkassk was necessary. The bones along with the monument were transferred in Novocherkassk in 1911. Baklanov's coffin was placed into a shrine under Novocherkassk Cathedral. The sculpture composition with some adjustments in the pedestal was moulded on Yermaka square. The monument is located to the south of the Novocherkassk Cathedral. The opening ceremony of the monument took place on October 5, 1911.[8]

The Our Lady of the Assumption Church It is a Catholic church in the city of Novocherkassk in Russia. It depends on the deanship of Rostov in the Diocese of Saint Clement at Saratov.

This church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin was built with the design of the Polish architect Bronisław Brochwicz-Rogoyski (1861-1921) in 1902 by the Polish community deported there after the Polish uprising of 1861-1864. It replaced an older church built in the second half of the nineteenth century. The church also served Catholic Armenians living in the area since the eighteenth century, and a few families of Don Germans.

The church was completed in 1906. The parish had 4,231 parishioners in 1917. Closed during the time of the Soviet Union, Father Johann Lang, continued his hidden pastoral work with his parishioners until he was deported in 1941. He died in the Gulag in 1944.

As normal relations resumed between the State and the various Christian denominations in the 1990s, the Catholic parish of Novocherkassk register established in 1993 and the church recovered in 1994.[11]
