Bovbjerg lighthouse was built between 1876 and 1877 and was first lit on 30 December 1877. The lighthouse's flame height is 62 m, while the tower itself is only 26 m high, as it stands on a high slope. Bovbjerg Lighthouse is a duck lighthouse, i.e. one of the large lighthouses used for navigation at sea.

The beacon character is two white flashes every 10 seconds. The light source has been changed several times, but the lighthouse still has its original Fresnel lens from 1877. Since 1978, like other Danish lighthouses, it has been controlled from Fornæs Fyr, and it still shines. In clear weather, the light can be seen from 16 nautical miles (29.5 kilometres) away.

There are 93 steps up to the viewing balcony. From here you can look out over Bovbjerg, an unspoilt ice age landscape, where lush green grasslands stretch all the way to the 40-metre-high cliff facing the sea.

The lighthouse was built according to a design by the lighthouse engineer C.F. Grove and architect N.S. Nebelong (died 1871, but provided the design for the corresponding Hirtshals Lighthouse in 1863).

In front of the lighthouse there is a memorial stone erected by the local bailiff in connection with the visit of King Frederik VI in 1826 and 1830. In the area there are also two memorial stones; north of the lighthouse there is a memorial stone for the Left politician Christen Berg, erected in 1902, north of Ferring Town there is a memorial stone for C.F. Grove, who initiated coastal protection on the west coast of Jutland in 1875.

In 2006, Bovbjerg Lighthouse was sold by the Water Board to Lemvig Municipality for DKK 1 million. As of 1 June 2007, it was transferred from Lemvig Municipality to the Bovbjerg Lighthouse Foundation for DKK 1. Bovbjerg Fyr and its activities are run by a board of trustees, a support association and a large number of volunteers. The lighthouse is now run as a popular excursion destination and meeting place.
