The foundation of Zofia Odrowąż Tarnowska in 1571, realized with the organizational help of Piotr Skargi. The Jesuit church of St. John was built in 1591-1594 probably according to the plans of Joseph Briccius (Giuseppe Brizio); Stefan Murator of Jarosław was active in the construction.

In its architecture, the temple originally referred to the church of Il Gesù in Rome.

The Renaissance church, originally single-nave with a transept, was rebuilt after fires in 1600 and 1625. Chapels were added in 1616-1624, and a porch in 1625-1628. In 1722 sculptures by Thomas Hutter were placed in front of the church (now there are copies). Extremely rich equipment of the church was confiscated after the dissolution of the Jesuit order. Since 1804 it is a parish church (after closing the collegiate church). The historic furnishings were moved from the collegiate church, which was destroyed by fire in 1862.

It is currently the oldest post-Jesuit church in Poland (during the First and Second Republic of Poland it was the Catholic church in Nesvizh).
