Silesian Park

Vast green space with family attractions. Silesian Park is a recreation complex in the center of the Upper-Silesian Metropolis in Chorzów in Upper Silesia, Poland.

Its formal name is "General Jerzy Ziętek Voivodeship Park of Culture and Recreation" (Wojewódzki Park Kultury i Wypoczynku im. gen. Jerzego Ziętka, abbreviated WPKiW), named after Jerzy Ziętek, a Silesian politician who headed the 1950s initiative to create this park. It restored an industrially devastated piece of land in the middle of a highly urbanized area. It is managed by WPKiW S.A.

The area of the park is 620 hectares. By comparison, it's almost twice as big as Central Park in New York.

Large zoo with dinosaur valley section. Silesian Zoological Garden is a zoological garden in Poland. It was founded in 1954 and is situated in the Katowice and Chorzów districts of Silesia. It covers over 47.6 ha within the Silesian Central Park.

The Silesian zoo is a home for about 2,500 animals of 300 species. It is visited by over 390,000 people annually.

A mini-zoo is the collection of gentler animals which are (directly) accessible to children.

The dinosaur valley contains a full-scale reconstruction of 16 large dinosaurs, the remains of which were found by a Polish expedition to the Gobi desert.[2]

Planetarium and observatory with exhibits. The Silesian Planetarium also Silesian Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory is the largest and oldest planetarium in Poland. It was founded on 4 December 1955 to commemorate the great astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. It is located in the Silesian Central Park, on the boundary between the Katowice and Chorzów districts of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union.[3]

Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park

Open-air musuem with historic cottages. The Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park is an open-air museum in Chorzów, Poland. It is referred to as a skansen, stemming from the first open-air museum of its kind, the Skansen in Stockholm, Sweden. The area of the park is 25 hectare.

The museum presents a range of agricultural buildings from all over Silesia. Amongst those are cottages from the Beskids, farmsteads from the Pszczyna region, a wooden church from Nieboczowy dating from the 18th century, and a large number of buildings and artifacts from Istebna in Cieszyn Silesia.[4]

Stadium in Chorzów, Poland. The Stadion Śląski is a sport stadium located on the premises of Silesian Park in Chorzów, Poland. The stadium has a fully covered capacity of 55,211, after a recent refurbishment completed in October 2017. The stadium hosted many Polish national football team matches and for many decades was Poland's national stadium. After the National Stadium in Warsaw had been completed, the Silesian Stadium lost that role. The stadium was not in operation between 2009 and 2017 due to its ongoing reconstruction.

Silesian Stadium is a UEFA Category 4 stadium. The stadium will host the 2028 European Athletics Championships.[5]

Stadium in Chorzów, Poland. Stadion GKS Katowice is a football stadium at Silesian Culture and Recreation Park in Chorzów, Poland. It is the home ground of GKS Katowice. The stadium also hosted three matches of Poland national football team. Venue holds 6,710 people and was built in 1955. There is a planned full reconstruction of a stadium that will take place in near future.[6]

Park in Poland. Żabie Doły is a nature and landscape protected area in Silesia, Poland. The Żabie Doły complex is located entirely within the Silesian Metropolis and encompasses land heavily altered by human activity. The protected area covers 2.262 km². At Żabie Doły, 129 species of birds have been identified, including 70 nesting species and 17 species rare in the region. Other fauna and flora is also well represented.

The name ""Żabie Doły" can be roughly translated as "Frog Ditches".[7]
