Wülzburg

Fortress in Weißenburg in Bayern, Germany. Wülzburg is a historical fortress of the Renaissance-age in Germany. It is about 2 kilometres east of the center of Weißenburg in Bayern. It stands on a hill 200 metres above Weißenburg, at an elevation of 630.5 metres, and was originally a Benedictine monastery dating from the 11th century.

It is one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Germany. Today it is as Ortsteil (locality) a part of the city of Weißenburg. It was converted into a fortress from 1588 to 1605 by George Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach.

In the 19th century it was an garrison of the Bavarian Army. During World War I, Charles DeGaulle was imprisoned at the Wülzburg. The Nazis also used it as a prison camp during World War II; it was here that the Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff was held for over a year before he died of TB. After the war it was a refugee camp.[1]

The Roman fort at Weissenburg, called Biriciana in ancient times, is a former Roman ala castellum, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located near the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. It lies in the borough of Weißenburg in the Middle Franconian county of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Germany. Today the castellum is one of the most important sites of research in the Roman limes in Germany. The site contains partly subterranean building remains, a reconstructed north gateway, large thermal baths and a Roman Museum with an integrated Limes Information Centre.[2]

The Old Town Hall of Weißenburg in Bavaria, a large district town in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, is located on the market square within the listed old town. Not far away is the Ellinger Tor, the square Am Hof and the town church St. Andreas and in the immediate vicinity is the Lebküchnerhaus. Directly in front of the building is the Schweppermannsbrunnen from the 16th century. The Old Town Hall stands in the geographical center of the northern part of the Old Town, at the crossroads of the long-distance trade routes that ran through Weißenburg. The building, with the address Marktplatz 1, is registered as a monument in the Bavarian list of monuments under the monument number D-5-77-177-258.

The Scheibleinsturm is a tower of the city wall of the Middle Franconian town of Weißenburg in Bavaria. The building is registered as a monument in the Bavarian monument list under the monument number D-5-77-177-392.

The tower was built in the 14th or 15th century and is located in the old town of Weissenburg on the section of the city moat, which is almost completely preserved along the Schanzmauer. It has the address Schanzmauer 8 and is located near the street Am Hof. The three-story building, 16 m high and 8.5 m wide, is a listed monument. The tower was originally higher. It is the only remaining round tower of the city wall. For a long time it was one of the city's prisons. Today it is inhabited together with the building attached in 1846. In 1989 and 1996 the Scheiblein tower was renovated.

The Fünfeckturm is a part of the city fortifications of Weißenburg in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen.

It is located near the Ellinger Tor and the Doerflervilla on Schulhausstraße and has the address Froschgasse 7. Like the entire old town of Weissenburg, it is a listed building. The pentagonal tower was part of the Weissenburg Zwinger and is one of the 38 surviving towers of the city wall. The tower is also called the Powder Tower. It is located on the northern wall. The tower was built in 1469.
