Mainzer Tor
The Mainzer Tor (Mainz Gate) is a late medieval gate tower on the western edge of the old town of Miltenberg, first mentioned in 1379, and at that time was the outermost western boundary point of the town. Above the gateway is emblazoned the coat of arms of the Archbishop of Mainz, Adolf I of Nassau, during whose reign the mighty tower was built. In the year of its construction, the town of Miltenberg had an extension of 2.5 kilometers between the western and eastern gate towers.
Due to the new building of the neighboring museum depot, city archive and youth center, which will open in May 2019, the Mainzer Tor can be walked on from an elevated level via a footbridge and experienced as a historic entrance to the city.
Würzburger Tor
The Würzburg Gate is a late medieval gate tower on the eastern edge of the old town of Miltenberg, first mentioned in 1379. Originally, it carried a gun platform with a battlement, as this side of the town was most at risk. However, the tower was already roofed over at the beginning of the 15th century. Portcullis ran up and down the hookstones on the outside and inside.
