Historical landmark in Cuxhaven, Germany. The Kugelbake is a historic day beacon in the city of Cuxhaven, Germany, at the northernmost point of Lower Saxony, where the River Elbe flows into the North Sea. In the Low German dialect of the Middle Ages, the term bake referred to all navigational aids – including lighthouses. About 30 meters high and built of wood, the Kugelbake is the principal landmark of Cuxhaven; since 1913, it has been depicted on the city's coat of arms. Large wooden structures guiding mariners have stood on this spot for over 300 years.[1]

The Wind Force 10 - Wreck and Fishing Museum Cuxhaven is a museum in Cuxhaven. The Alte Liebe is a former pier in the harbor of Cuxhaven, which today serves as an observation deck. It is located on the upstream boundary of the Cuxhaven harbor to the fairway of the Lower Elbe. Ships to Neuwerk and Helgoland, as well as to the sandbanks with the seals, depart inland from the harbor near the platform.

Fort Kugelbake

Fort Kugelbake is a former naval fortress in Cuxhaven in today's Döse spa district. It is located on the last headland at the mouth of the Elbe River behind the sea dike near the Kugelbake sea mark that gives it its name. The fort was built between 1869 and 1879 at a strategically favorable position at the mouth of the river in order to block access to the Elbe for enemy warships, at that time French, with its 14 coastal guns. Today it is the last surviving naval artillery fort on the German North Sea coast.
