Fortress in Alessandria, Italy. The Cittadella of Alessandria is a star fort and citadel in the city of Alessandria, Italy. It was built in the 18th century by the Kingdom of Sardinia, and today it is one of the best preserved fortifications of that era. It is one of the few fortifications in Europe still in their original environment, since there are no buildings blocking the views of the ramparts, or a road that surrounds the ditches.

On 10 March 1821, during the Piedmont insurrection, the blue, red and black tricolour of the Carbonari was raised on the Cittadella's bastions by Colonel Ansaldi. This was the first use of a tricolour flag in the history of Italy.

The Cittadella has been Italy's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2006.[1]

The Cittadella Bridge, or Tanaro Bridge, or since 2016 Meier Bridge, is a bridge in Alexandria. The union of the two city banks of the Tanaro River has always been a history full of extreme events, and it has been of decisive importance in the territory over the centuries for its strategic function as a link between the city, the Bergoglio district first, the military Citadel later, and the communication routes with Asti, Casale and Monferrato. There are at least four major demolitions and subsequent reconstructions of the bridge over the centuries. The last demolition took place in 2009, and work on the new bridge, designed by Richard Meier, lasted four years, from 2012 to 2016.

The church of Santa Maria di Castello can be considered a symbol of Alexandria's urban history; it is referred to, in fact, as the oldest place in the city in the absence of the religious pole par excellence: the ancient 12th-century cathedral of St. Peter, demolished by order of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. The church is located in the square of the same name, and together they form the heart of Borgo Rovereto, an ancient neighborhood in the historic center of Alexandria. Castrum Roboreti, or more simply Roboretum, such were the ancient Latin names, formerly curtis regia in the 8th century, was one of the eight settlements that contributed to the founding of the city of Alexandria in the second half of the 12th century.
