Building in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Harker House is a historic building located in Storm Lake, Iowa, United States. This two-story Second Empire house is attributed to Fort Dodge, Iowa architect James Harker. It is the only local house remaining in this style that has not been torn down or substantially altered. Featuring mansard roofs with dormer windows, a mansarded tower, bracketed cornice, hooded windows and doors, projecting bays, and highly decorative single-story porches, it is a textbook example of the Second Empire style. It was built in 1875 of locally produced brick. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.[1]

Museum in Storm Lake, Iowa. The former Storm Lake Public Library is located in Storm Lake, Iowa, United States. The Carnegie Corporation of New York accepted Storm Lake's application for a grant for $10,000 on December 4, 1903. Designed by Paul O. Moratz, the new library was dedicated on September 29, 1906. After its use as a library, the building housed the museum for the Buena Vista County Historical Society. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.[2]

Private university in Storm Lake, Iowa. Buena Vista University is a private university in Storm Lake, Iowa. Founded in 1891 as Buena Vista College, it is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The university's 60-acre campus is situated on the shores of Storm Lake, a 3,200-acre natural lake.
At its inception, the college was housed in the Storm Lake Opera House, where it remained for only a year. Old Main, the college's first building, opened in 1892, and was occupied by faculty and students until it burned down in 1956. Major construction projects in the 1950s and 1960s extended the college, which soon included three dormitories, a library, and a number of classroom buildings.
The main campus of Buena Vista University offers a four-year residential collegiate experience and offers classes in 42 majors. Seventeen additional locations throughout Iowa and online serve working adult and graduate students as part of the Graduate & Professional Studies program.[4]
