Putbus Castle was the former manorial seat of the Princes of Putbus in the eponymous town of Putbus on the island of Rügen, founded in 1810. The building was blown up in 1962 and the remains were removed by 1964, so that today only the outline of the building in the green area and the lake terrace are recognizable. The house-head-over is an "upside-down house", a building standing on its pointed roof.

The house was built in Putbus on the island of Rügen and was opened in July 2010. In the external shape of a typical single-family house, a 12-meter-long, 10-meter-wide and 12-meter-high building was erected. It touches the ground only with a part of its roof ridge, above which the floors of the building rise in reverse order. At the top is the floor slab, which serves as a viewing platform. To ensure the structure's statics, a steel skeleton weighing 35 tons was installed. The construction costs amounted to more than 300,000 €. The construction company was Hermann Loers.

The house is completely furnished inside with bedroom, living room, children's room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen, where all items are also upside down. Furniture such as chairs, cabinets, tables and bed, but also shower and toilet thus hang upside down from the floor. Since the building is also slightly tilted horizontally and vertically, visitors' sense of balance is irritated.

The house is not habitable due to its furniture, but can be heated. It can be visited all year round for a fee. It is operated by Pirateninsel Rügen GmbH. The company also runs the Pirateninsel indoor playground in the immediate vicinity, which has been housed in a former DIY store since 2007.

A similar building was already erected in Trassenheide on Usedom in 2008.
