Philippsruhe Palace was built from about 1700 to 1725 for Count Philipp Reinhard of Hanau near Kesselstadt as a Baroque palace in the west of the city of Hanau.

Its present appearance is largely due to alterations made during the Wilhelminian period: Landgrave Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessen-Rumpenheim only lived in the palace for four years (from 1880 until his death in 1884), which is little in view of the five years of alterations that preceded it; however, the rooms on the "Bel Etage", which are now occupied by the History Museum, dominantly reflect his taste in the Renaissance style, despite the fact that much of the furnishings have been lost.

The Walloon Dutch Church in Hanau was the double church of Reformed denomination of the New Town of Hanau founded by Count Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau-Münzenberg for religious refugees from France and the Spanish Netherlands. The exterior work was completed with the first church service on October 29, 1608, while the interior work took several more years. After its destruction in World War II, only the smaller, formerly Dutch half of the church was rebuilt.
