Schloss Hülchrath
Hülchrath Castle is a former Electoral Cologne castle in the Grevenbroich district of Hülchrath in the Rhine district of Neuss. Located on the Gillbach, the moated castle dates back to a 12th-century castle and has preserved much of its medieval building fabric.
The history of the complex illustrates very well the typical development of a noble seat in the Rhineland: through continuous growth, a wooden motte changed via a two-part moated castle in the Renaissance to a castle complex which, after destruction in the 17th century, was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Middle Ages, the Hülchrath complex was one of the most important regional castles of the Cologne territory.
The castle complex is now privately owned and is partly used for residential purposes. It is not possible to visit the interior. The entire property is accessible only with the permission of the owner for reasons of private and insurance law. The castle served as a filming location for the fairy tale film The Water of Life (2017) as well as the crime scene Long Live the King! from 2020.
The castle and village of Hülchrath are listed as a monument area. In addition, the castle has been protected as an architectural monument since March 27, 1985.
