The Imperial Churchyard, also called the Austrian Cemetery or the War Memorial, is a resting place for the military hospital residents of the Main Army Hospital in Bensberg Castle who died mainly of typhus and were buried in mass graves in the Milchborntal in Bensberg on the southwestern edge of the Hardt. The name Imperial Cemetery is based on the fact that the site was built in 1854, at the time of the Empire of Austria, with its support. The name Austrian Cemetery is intended to remind us that it was soldiers of the Austrian troops in the last phase of the so-called Holy Roman Empire who were buried here.
